3 women on the benefits of working in IT

13 February 2023

A career switch; out of necessity; or accidentally fell into it. We hear 3 different stories from our front-end developer Dulce, producteer Veerle and tester Ruth, when we ask them why they chose IT. They do have one thing in common: all three of them work in a technical position in our company. Which prompts us to ask ourselves: what makes a job in IT interesting?

There is something magical about working in IT. Understanding how something works, the VIP access you get to the background as a developer is amazing.

Did you also choose to study IT before you ended up here, ostensibly an IT company?

Ruth - Actually not, no. I graduated as an industrial engineer. When I applied somewhere else, I couldn't start within the position I had in mind. That same company did indicate that they were tight in the testing department, and voila: my career as a tester was launched. I've never done anything else since :)

Veerle - I’m an IT’er, simple as that. But to be honest, my preference would have been to study bioengineering. Only issue was I couldn't handle those studies physically (Veerle is in a wheelchair). So, I chose studies that challenged me intellectually and yet were compatible with my disability.

Dulce - In my final year as a graphic designer, we were given a school assignment to develop a game. That programming, the control over how something works, is something that immediately attracted me. When I moved to Belgium from Mexico, I started my graduate studies in programming.

There is a lot of variety in an IT job. The only constant is that the job is always changing :)

What makes working in IT enjoyable?

Ruth - The variety. You get to deal with many different technologies, you can't afford to stay behind. The sector is evolving quickly, and you 'move' with it and keep learning. I find that fascinating and exciting at the same time.

Veerle - Working in IT offers a lot of opportunities; in recent years, for example, I was able to specialise as a producteer. There is a lot of variety in an IT job. The only constant is that the job is always changing :)
